Trevor Parkhill wasn’t even involved in the game at home to Dergview where the alleged betting took place.

“On the Friday before the game I was doing a few bets on Cheltenham through my betting account on my phone,” he said.

“I always do an Irish league bet for my father as well as he had rung me about a few horses and he asked could I do a bet on Dergview as well.

“In fact from time to time my little brother would do the odd bet through my betting account as well. To be honest I never really thought anything about it because it was a small bet (£30), my father’s usual wager.

“The first thing I knew anything about it really was when they hadn’t paid out when the bet won.”

Although the IFA sent around betting regulations to all clubs at the start of the season Parkhill admits he still didn’t really know that he shouldn’t have been betting on Irish League games.

“It’s only now when I have sat down and looked at the regulations that I have realised that I should have been doing the bet.

Reading through the regulations I have realised that I have made a massive mistake putting this bet on for my father.

“For that I hold my hands up and admit that I made the bet when I shouldn’t have despite the fact I didn’t really realise I wasn’t supposed to.”

“I hadn’t even been at training on the Tuesday because it had actually been cancelled by the manager.

“I was working on Thursday night and in fact I was in my work on the Saturday as well doing overtime. I hadn’t actually spoken to any of the other players during that week either so I didn’t know what was happening.

“It wasn’t even for personal gain that I placed the bet because as I said it was for my father and if it had’ve been for personal gain or was anything underhand then I would have placed a lot more money.”

With the player now suspended by his club, he acknowledges that he should have been wiser about what he was doing.

“I can understand exactly why I have been suspended by the club and to be honest I can have no arguments with that.

“If I had of thought that I was doing something I shouldn’t have then I wouldn’t have done it because that’s the sort of person I am.

“It has been a bit of stupidity on my part - for that I have to take responsibility because I made a mistake.

“I hold my hands up and I know now that what I did was wrong, but at the time I didn’t know I was doing wrong,” he stated.
