“In the history of amateur internationals - which date back to 1906, with the final fixture in 1974 - Portadown had 24 players on duty for a tally of 41 caps.

“Goalkeeper Nat Adams was the first to gain such recognition for the Ports, with his fifth cap arriving against England in 1925 to add to those picked up as a Cliftonville player.

“David Malcolmson’s sole honour was awarded in Northern Ireland’s final amateur international as Wales won 1-0 on April 6, 1974.

“John Doherty and Jackie Dobbin share the club record of four amateur caps apiece.

“Doherty made three appearances against England, plus met Scotland - as well as receiving a full international cap against France in 1928 alongside club colleague Hugh Blair.

“Dobbin’s amateur caps arrived with his first and final appearances against England, as well as Scotland and the Gold Coast in the early 1950s.

“Dobbin bagged two goals in a 5-2 victory against the Gold Coast during 1951, with Portadown’s Eamon McLoughlin also on show against rivals who played barefoot.

“Dobbin and McLoughlin were joined by Portadown’s Tommy Andrews in 1951 against England and Scotland.

“Familiar names such as Trevor Anderson, Tommy Andrews, Dave Clements, Jackie Gorman, Ivan Hoare, Terry Kingon and Harry Robinson can also be included on the club’s list of amateur internationals.

“Bobby Carlisle represented the club in the amateur Home International Series during 1972, adding his name to that of Billy Kennedy from the 1954 tournament.

“Ben Clarke - the grandfather of golf’s Darren Clarke - picked up two caps in 1934, having joined the Ports from Dungannon.

“Shamrock Park has a rich history as host venue to amateur internationals - with five taking place in town from 1952 to 1969.

“The first, between Northern Ireland and England, attracted 8,125.”
