Penalty shoot-out agony for United

Newbuildings United...1

Dunmurry Rec...1

(Dunmurry Rec won 4-2 on penalites)

NEWBUILDINGS United bowed out of the Coca/Cola Intermediate Cup, going out on penalties at home to Belfast amateur side Dunmurry Rec.

The home side started the better with Dougherty and Robinson causing problems up front and it was the latter who had the first chance of the match when he was put through one on one with the keeper but he shot tamely at the Rec keeper, who saved easily.

United continued to push forward and it was robinson who had another chance shortly afterwards when he intercepted a back pass and shot from a tight angle only for the Dunmurry keeper to save smartly to his left and the rebound was cleared.

The visitors struggled to get out of their own half and when they did they failed to muster a shot on target to trouble Thornton in the United goals.

Newbuildings took the lead when Dougherty eveded a couple of challenges and sent in a shot from 18 yards out which the keeper could only parry into the path of Falconer who slotted home from close range.

The second half saw Wesley Robinson’s side unable to get going and the visiting side came more into the game forcing a couple of corners but still unable to register a shot on target.

Dunmurry got on level terms when a corner from the left saw a number of players rise at the front post and the ball end up in the roof of the net.

United were reduced to 10 men when Moore was sent off for a tackle which seemed worth a booking at the very most!

This did not deter the home side and they continued to press forward and Dougherty produced a great save from the Rec keeper, diving low to his left to keep out his effort form the edge of the box.

Another chance went a begging when a low cross from the right saw Dougherty get a touch and divert the ball goalwards only for the Rec net-minder to pull off a point blank save.

Extra-time saw both teams tire and no real chances for either sides so penalties were needed and it was the away side who came out victorious winning 4-2.
