Penalty win for Seconds

Dromore Amateurs Seconds welcomed Craigavon City to Ferris Park on Saturday in Junior Cup with the Amateurs underdogs against their Mid Ulster Division Two opponents.

The locals started quietly and it was Craigavon who had first sight on goal with Beggs making great save to thwart the nippy Craigavon forward.

In fact it was one of many saves he made during the game to keep Craigavon at bay.

Dromore gradually got more into the game with Smith up front causing the Craigavon defence problems and it was danger man Smith that chested inside the box and volleyed into corner for great goal after good build up play from Curran.

It didn’t take to long for Craigavon to respond and within five mins they were level when there forward robbed Martin on the bye line to square for forward to tap in to make it 1-1.

As the half come to a close Beggs again kept the side level with two great saves to go in 1-1 half time.

The second half started with Dromore changing to 3-5-2 and this seemed to pay dividends with Dromore coming more into the game.

Beattie was introduced and almost immediately scored with his first touch when volleying wide with the goal at his mercy. Craigavon dominated the last 20 mins of the 90 and only for the heroics of Henderson Dromore hung on to take it to extra time.

Amateurs defended for 20 minutess off extra time superbly to take it to the dreaded penalty kicks.

First up Craigavon missed with Stewart scoring for Amateurs. The second taker scored for Craigavon with Lockhart replying for Dromore. The third taker made it 2-2 only for McMurray to step up to make it 3-2 Dromore.

Beggs pulled off a super save to thwart the fourth Craigavon taker which left it to Henderson to blast into top corner for 4-2 victory on penalties.

Next up for the Amateurs Seconds is a tricky away trip to 18th Newtonabbey in league on Saturday.
