Gannon surprisingly left County last week with the club fifth in the National League. ‘Cultural differences’ was the unusual reason given by the club.

Rusk, who was linked with the manager’s job at Cambridge United last year, has been working within the Brighton Academy since 2012 and has a reputation as an excellent coach.

Rusk (39) grew up in Bretton and joined the Posh youth set-up as a combative midfielder. He earned a short-term professional contract, but failed to make a first-team appearance before joining Steve Evans at Boston United. He played over 150 times for Boston and went on to play for Rushden & Diamonds, Northwich Victoria, York and Crawley, again under Evans, before retiring.

Director of football at County is another Peterborough man Simon Wilson.
