Plans almost complete for Ric Moore memorial tournament

A charity football tournament later this month will perpetuate the memory of a Ballymena man who died in tragic circumstances late last year.

Richard Moore, known to his friends as Ric, passed away in December after choking on food while dining with work colleagues.

Now the tournament - for the Ric Moore Memorial Cup - will help remember the hugely popular local man, as well as raising funds for the Causeway Hospital Intensive Care Unit, where Ric was treated prior to his death.

The competition will take place at Ballymena Showgrounds next Saturday, July 23.

Ric played for Ballymena Saturday Morning League team Wakehurst Star and was a keen supporter of the team. Star will compete in the pre-season tournament along with Wakehurst Strollers, Ahoghill Rovers and a team made up of Ric’s friends, colleagues and former team mates.

There will be a collection taken up throughout the day and proceeds will go to the Causeway Hospital ICU.

The tournament will run from 12-4pm starting in a round robin set up, then the two teams who finish at the top of the group qualify to play in the final.

The organisers have also thanked referees Bert Purdy and Derrick Dempster and Don Stirling of Stirling Trophies for providing trophies and medals free of charge.
