Poor finishing costs Glebe

Rangers boss Peter Cairns (pictured) saw his charges lose 1-3 at the Riada Stadium but was not too disheartened by his side’s display.

Glebe got off to a poor start when they conceded inside two minutes. They did not let in any more goals until the last 10 minutes and also grabbed a late consolation effort.

With Glebe already relegated to the Championship Two, it could have been feared that Rangers would have been given a harsh lesson by the visitors.

However, Glebe were never overawed and the scoreline could have been closer.

Cairns said: “It should have been better, we did well, probably our best performance since we got relegated.

“We were relaxed and played good football, unfortunately it wasn’t to be considering we were against the champions, we gave it a good go.

“They scored on two minutes from a corner, which was disappointing. The third was a soft goal, we have seen the same thing in the last few matches.

“It was a setback after two minutes, but we came back and played well.

“We’d two or three good chances, but didn’t take any of them. That showed the difference between top and bottom of the league.”

On 81 minutes the Mallards got their second goal from a free kick near their own box.

The goalie punted the ball down to Glebe’s penalty area. The ball was knocked wide and then slotted in following a cross.

The third goal arrived on 85 minutes after another cross in the danger area. Substitute Nigel Turner grabbed Glebe’s consolation goal in the dying minutes, while Rangers could have pulled another one back at the end.

Glebe play their last game of the season on Saturday at home against Banbridge (kick-off 2pm). And Cairns has already started his preparations to rebuild his squad for the next season.
