Portglenone suffer home defeat

IN A match played during an afternoon of almost continuous rain it was the Ramore Head men who adapted better to the conditions as they held out to secure a match win.

It was the home team who edged the first 5 ends when they lead 17-15 however during what was to prove to be a decisive period in the match during ends 6 to10 the visitors built a 10 shot (32-42) lead.

Ends 11 to 15 saw the home side steady the ship, reducing the arrears slightly for a 49-57 scoreline with 6 ends to play but the Portrush team determinately held on to claim the overall score and 5 league points.

On rink 1 Andrew Millar, Frank Jackson, Aaron Foster and Roy Hunter got off to a good start against Ian Mc Clure lifting a 4 on the first end but it was the visitors who were to dominate proceedings unto the mid game stage as they scored a 1,1,2,3,2,4,2,3 for the loss of a single to lead 5-18. A single for Roy on the 11th end followed by a 1,2,3,1 for Ian stretched his lead to 19 shots and a further single for Roy and a 2 for Ian left the score at 7-27 with 17 ends played. A spirited finish by the home rink, scoring a 3,2,2,1 left a final rink score of 15-27.

With the score at 2-2 after 4 ends on rink two there was no indication of what was to follow as Adam Hunter, Stephen Young, Peter Mc Cann and Eamon Mc Cann played Jackie Smyth's foursome. A 4 for Eamon on the 5th end was more then matched by a 2,3 for Jackie to lead 6-7 however a 4,2,1,2,2,2,1 sequence turned the game strongly in the home rinks favour. Jackie lifted a 2 on the 15th but a further 1,2,1,3 by Eamon gave him a 27-9 advantage with 2 to play. A 4,1 finish by the visitors reduced the arrears, however the 27-14 score was a very good result for Eamon's rink.

It was the visiting rink skipped by Kevin O Neill who dominated the early proceedings against Jonathan Reid, Jim Gaul, Geoff Padgett and Kieran Adams on rink 3. Kevin was 1-8 in front after just 4 ends however a 1,4 response by the home rink brought the score to 6-8. Three singles put the Portrush men 6-11 ahead but a 3,1 brought the home Ports to within 1 shot at 10-11 with 11 ends played. A scoring spree of 3,1,1,3,1,4 in worsening weather conditions put the Ramore Head men out of sight and they went on to record a very comfortable 12-27 victory.

There was an excellent contest on rink 4 as Mark Pearson, Mark Jones, Keith Padgett (Keith was recovering from back surgery a few days earlier and played the match with the aid of a walking stick - there were suggestions after the game that he should continue with this prop but these are unsubstantiated) and Chris Jones played Gary Mc Cloy. Chris had built a 5-1 lead with 6 ends played but a 1,1,1,2 for Gary gave him the advantage at 5-6. A 2,3,1,1 response by Chris gave him a 6 shot (12-6) lead and a single for the visitors on the 15th end was followed by a 2,1 for the home rink to leave a 15-7 scoreline with 4 ends to play. A 3,1 for Gary was followed by a home 3 but the visitors had the final say as they scored a 4 on the last end. The 18-15 final score represented an excellent home performance.
