Portglenone's winning run comes to a halt

PORTGLENONE'S impressive recent run of victories came to a crashing halt at the hands of second-placed Coleraine last week.

The Ports started well, taking a seven shot (22-15) lead across the green after five ends.

The balance had swung in the visitors favour by the end of the 10th end as they lead 32-35 however the match again see-sawed once more with home side going 54-49 ahead with 15 played.

It was at this stage of the proceedings that the Lodge Road men had a totally dominant period as over ends 16,17 and 18 they romped ahead establishing a match winning 18 shot (58-76) lead and went on to record a comfortable 68-84 victory.

On rink 1 Tommy McCart, Jim Gaul, Frank Jackson and Kieran Adams got off to a great start against Mervyn McKeeman’s quartet as they built a 13-1 lead with just 6 ends played.

A trio of ‘2's by Mervyn followed by 2 singles for the home rink left the score at 15-7 with 11 ends played. Again the away rink fought back scoring a 1,4 however a 2,2,2 for the home rink gave them a good 21-12 lead with 5 to play.

Ends 17 and 18 proved decisive for the visitors as a 4,5 put them level at 21-21 and after shared singles it was Mervyn who took the spoils with a single on the last.

The visiting rink finished strongly to reduce the arrears to just 3 shots to leave a final score of 17-14 and a welcome home win.

Despite a 3,3 start to this game the home rink of Andrew Millar, Jonathan Reid, Aaron Foster and Roy Hunter were soon playing second fiddle to Victor Dallas as he posted an unanswered 2,1,2,1,1,3,2,1,4,2 to lead 6-19 with 12 played.

The home rink rallied with a 1,2,1 but Victor responded with a 2,1,3 to lead 10-25. A 1,3 finish by Roy restored a measure of respectability for the home rink with a final 14-25 scoreline.

Portglenone's next league fixture is away to runaway league leaders Ballymoney tonight (Tuesday).
