Ports are forging ahead at top of 'Two'

PORTGLENONE Community Centre are pushing ahead of the second division filed and last week's home win over Harryville CC was their sixth on the trot and eighth from 10 games played.

In a game of two distinct halves, the visitors took both first half points and led by six shots overall. This was the result of a three-shot win from rinks skipped by Norman Worthington and J Patterson.

The half-time tea break certainly paid dividends for the Ports as the second pair of games went very much their way, with Tom McCart registering a six-shot win, which wiped out the half-time deficit.

Joe McErlean's rink of P Boorman, M McCart and J Shaw carried the team through to victory with an eight-shot win over Stewart Wilson.

Clough Rangers kept themselves in the hunt with a three-shot win at the Golf Club, where the Seniors claimed two valuable points as they attempt to climb clear of trouble at the other end of the table.

Again, it was a 'game of two halves' with Rangers rinks skipped by Andrew Armstrong and Jimmy Gregg opening up a 17-shot lead for Clough at the interval.

Clough appeared to be on easy street but the Seniors fought back with wins from John Nichols and Donald Smyth but they fell just three shots shy of wiping out that 17-shot deficit.

Maine put a halt to BPFA 'B's run when they registered a two shot overall success, to claim only their second win of the season.

Yet another 'game of two halves' saw the home team get off to a flier with Laurence McQuillan and Pat Kerr building up a half-time lead of 13 shots for Maine.

Although the Playing Fields came back with an eight-shot win from Joe Campbell and James Wasson gained a three-shot victory, the home side held on for the overall point.

Services Club 'A' have established themselves in the middle of the table and they had a fine home win against West Church 'A', who are having a mixed season.

Each team took a point from the opening half, with Bill Kitson's rink the masters against Matt McPeake, to which Michael Wilson replied with a hard-earned point, by one shot, against Pauline Wilson.

The second pair of games went very much the way of Services with George Beattie and Mark Shaw steering them to a comprehensive victory.

Pauline Wilson scored a four on the eighth end, only to drop the same number on the next end and, entering the last end all square, the West rink notched up a single, while Kitson's rink dominated to the extent that they won eight of the 10 ends.
