Portuguese double at Welly Rec

THERE was a Portuguese prize double with Wellington Rec seconds as Luiz Carreira and Miguel Castro lifted the club’s and players’ Player of the Year awards at the annual presentation dinner.

The first-team Player of the Year award went to left-back and dead ball specialist, William Magill, while the players’ trophy was shared between Andy Magee and Larne-bound Scott Todd.

Josh McAllister was the leading goalscorer, while the most improved player was young Dean Shaw, who weighed in with his fair share of goals, after clinching a slot in the first-team in the closing months of the season, having started the season with St Comgall’s.

Chairman Jeff Carmichael welcomed everyone and thanked the players and management for their efforts over the season, with a special word for the likes of Billy Duddy, John Shirley, Frankie Graham and Ian McConnell who do so much for the club behind the scenes.

Jeff announced the following winners, who received their awards from first-team manager, Kenny Thompson.

Wellington Rec have some interesting pre-season friendlies, where all three East Antrim ‘Irish League’ sides visiting Brookvale Park. Carrick Rangers in the annual open day on Saturday, July 28, then Ballyclare Comrades the following Tuesday (July 31) and Larne on the Thursday (August 2).
