Rangers boss is full of praise for ‘cool customer’ Chines

Miguel Chines etched his name into a very exclusive list of players who have completed a hat-trick of penalties as Carrick Rangers defeated Lisburn Distillery 4-2 at the weekend.

“It was a strange game in some ways,” reflected manager Gary Haveron, “but that mainly because we made very hard work of it. I would have to say that, even when we were two goals behind, I was still pretty confident we would win.

“We gave away two sloppy goals, the first where we didn’t properly defend a cross and the second when we didn’t take up the correct positions from a dead-ball situation. So I was very disappointed at needlessly going 2-0 down.

“But we got a goal back at just the right time, shortly before halftime, because it might have been tougher to get back had they gone in 2-0 up.

“I know Distillery will be feeling sore about the three penalties and I can understand that, but technically I would agree with all the decisions. Miguel Chines worried the wee defender into climbing all over him for the opener, which he slotted away.

“They had Joe McDonnell foolishly sent off after getting involved in an altercation when he was already on a yellow and from there it was one-way traffic.

“They disputed the second and third penalties and I could see where they were coming from but they were rightly awarded and each time Miguel despatched them to the net.

“He’s a cool customer who knows where the nets are. That’s why we brought him to the club. All the players having their confidence boosted by knowing there’s a clinical finisher ready and waiting to score when the opportunity comes along, spot-kick or otherwise.

“Ben Roy then added the fourth goal with a lovely volley to kill the game off. And, given that their goalkeeper made three or four great saves, I think the result was a fair reflection of the play.

“Next up, it’s the league and the match against Ards is the start of a tough run of matches for us, with Loughgall and the league cup clash with Cliftonville coming hard on the heels of the match against the title favourites.

Niall Currie has won the league with Loughgall and he has improved his squad from last season’s Premier League campaign by adding even more quality performers, so they will be a seriously tough test. But we are confident that we can beat them at Taylor’s Avenue, who had added inspiration for wanting to do well.”
