Rangers host soccer camp

RANGERS Football Club are in the city for a Soccer Camp from today (Wednesday) until Friday. The camp, which is being held at the Irish Street Astroturf Facility is open to anyone interested aged between 8-15 years.

The camp costs 10 per player for the three-days. The 8-11 year age group runs from 10am-12 noon and the 12-15 year age group runs from 1pm-3pm each day.

To register for a place contact Martin on (0774) 048 6994 or turn up to pay and play on the day if places are still available.

The local event is part of a series of Soccer Schools which RFC have brought to Northern Ireland this summer, and is being subsidised through a joint initiative with the Community Relations Officers from the Community Services Section in Derry City Council.

Gerry McColgan, Community Services Programme Organiser with the Council said: "The Programme provides social, health and reconciliation opportunities through a range of coaching activities. Its delivery is in a key venue for providing positive diversionary activity for young people at this time in the summer and will also have an anti-sectarian message included in its delivery as well as linking in with the IFA officer based in Derry City Council."

Raymond Farrelly, Community Manager with Rangers Football Club, said: "The camp demonstrates how excellent opportunities for children can be provided to lead a healthier lifestyle while addressing issues such as equalities and community safety. Rangers Football Club is committed to working with its partners to use the powerful influence of football to encourage children to make positive lifestyle choices.

"We are all aware that sport offers many benefits to individuals such as improving health and quality of life. Programmes such as this not only benefit the children and young people involved but also prove positive for entire communities. They reach out to children and young people and leave their mark in many ways by teaching them new skills and helping them to gain new experiences which work to improve their social interaction," he added.

Advance registration is recommended as places are limited. Subsidised with funding from the District Council's Community Relations Programme, OFMDFM.
