Rangers knocked out by Larne in cup

Glebe Rangers were knocked out of the Coca Cola Intermediate Cup after a 2-0 defeat against Larne at Inver Park on Saturday.

After a bright start for the home side, the game became scrappy and fragmented. Indeed, the opening period was marred by a nasty collision which knocked out Glebe Rangers goalkeeper Brian Kane.

Kane had tried to come through a crowd of players to collect a free kick crossed into the box. However, he appeared to collide with one of his own players.

Kane was treated on the pitch before being stretchered off. He eventually left the ground in an ambulance as a precautionary measure. Everyone at both clubs wishes Brian a speedy recovery.

Outfield substitute, David McVicker took over goalkeeping duties and made a tremendous save by tipping a thunderous 25 yard shot from Workman onto the bar.

In the second half, Ian Parkhill had a glorious chance to put the visitors ahead. Parkhill had got in behind the Larne defence and faced an onrushing David Henry, but his attempted lob bounced wide of the post.

It was a costly miss as Larne took the lead on 56 minutes.

A Workman throw in from the right was knocked on by Yilmaz and Moore, and Paul Maguire poked the ball into the net at the near post to take his tally to 18 for the season.

Larne doubled the lead nine minutes later and it came from an excellent move.

Yilmaz played a good one-two with McAllister before finding Gary Workman in the penalty area.

Workman had time and space in the area and the local lad took a touch and smashed the ball into the net for his third goal of the competition. Brian McClean was close to claiming a rare goal when he was on the end of a similar combination of sharp passing. However, McClean was denied by a good save by McVicker.

Glebe’s next game is at the Riada Stadium on Saturday. Limavady United are the visitors in a Belfast Telegraph Championship 1 basement clash (kick off at 3pm).

Glebe will look to bounce back from the cup defeat in a bid to avoid relegation.

Peter Cairns’ men lie in 13th spot with 10 points in the bottom two while Limavady sit just above the drop zone.

They are in 11th place on 17 points having played 14 games - two less than Glebe.

Both sides will be looking to pick up crucial points so it should make for an exciting game.
