Rathfriland U12s clinch a well-earned victory over Lurgan Town

Rathfriland U12s played their first game in the Mid Ulster League GDC against Lurgan Town on the new 4G surface at Tandragee on Saturday morning.

It was the Armagh team that started the brighter, making Conor O’Hare in goal for Rafthfriland pull of a couple of very sound saves with shots raining in on him from distance.

The task of fighting back looked to get even harder when left-winger Peter Newell aggravated a niggling back injury and forcing him to leave the field of play. However ,his team-mates performed for him and hit back before the break with a great long range shot from captain Jack Baird. Leading by example, his effort flew like an arrow into the top corner.

The second half saw Niall Husarz push forward into midfield. With some neat passing from Peter Haughey, Brendan Tumilty released Husarz who fired home from close range to complete another well-worked goal.

Lurgan pushed forward for the equaliser but some excellent defending from Tomas McKay, Peter McEvoy and Jack Baird assisted by a solid dsplay from goalkeeper O’Hare, who was enjoying a very impressive debut between the sticks, kept them at bay. It was Husarz who clinched the win, running onto a ball on the edge of the box and firing home to cap a fine display with a very well-taken goal.
