RNIB Northern Ireland take on MLAs

NORTHERN Ireland’s only partially sighted football team took on a group of MLAs at Stormont on Tuesday March 5.

Lisburn overs has been in existence for seven years through a partnership between RNIB NI and the IFA. The club trains weekly at the Lagan Valley Leisureplex, working with both children and adults.

The team plays Futsal (the Brazilian version of indoor football) and has competed in various competitions across the UK. Last year the team won three trophies including a competition set up by Chelsea FC and the IFA as well as the annual Lisburn Futsal Cup where they beat and IFA team full of ex professionals to lift the trophy.

Niall Dempsey, Team captain said, “We were extremely keen for this game to take place. We hope this will raise the awareness in Stormont of the capabilities of partially sighted people.”

Lisburn Rovers were entered in a UK league for visually impaired teams for the first time this year and are currently leading the way by five points with three games left to go.

Niall continued, “It may be the case that you can’t see as well as your peers, however that does not stop you taking part in all aspects of life be it professional or social.”
