Robinson happy tobe still in the hat

NEWBUILDINGS United manager Wesley Robinson wasn’t too disheartened following Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Coagh United, in the JJB Sports Irish Cup sixth round.

The Waterside man believes his players will be confident of progressing to the quarter-final stages and will have no fear of the Championship Two leaders.

“I wasn’t really that disappointed with the result, because they (Coagh) are a good side and the conditions of the pitch helped them, because it’s very heavy and it didn’t suit us, so because of that I was quite happy with the result.

“Coming away with a draw meant we were still in the hat for the next round.

“I feel in the replay we’ll have to come to terms with the pitch, more than we do having to come to terms with Coagh.

“They have a couple of good players, one in midfield and one in defence and our thoughts are if we can limit them then that is there danger taken away because the other nine players are pretty much the same as ourselves, they are good players but aren’t outstanding.

“We were a wee bit unlucky the way their goal went in and they put a lot of pressure on us by putting a lot of balls into our box, but they didn’t create anything really, we created two clear cut chances, while although they had most of the ball, I felt we created the more open chances.”

Robinson also feels now that his side have seen Coagh in the flesh then they know that they have more than a fighting chance of causing another upset.

“We are confident going into the replay, I’m confident that the players will do well and it’s good now that the players have seen Coagh, it’s one thing hearing us talking about them, but now that they have seen them, I think there confidences will be up a wee bit more.

“There won’t be the fear about playing a higher league team, they know now that they can compete with them and because of that I think we’ll do well.”

The only downside that the replay will be played next Monday afternoon is that Robinson feels their large travelling support will not be the same in the replay.

“We had a very big support there at the weekend and going by the way people are talking, they all want to go back up on the Monday afternoon, so how I don’t think there will be as big as crowd, but I think you might see around 100 supporters going up again, which is good.

“The noise and racket they made on Saturday was unbelievable, unfortunately we have to sit underneath the tin roof, which they were backing on, that was the only downside, but all jokes aside, the supporters definitely make a difference to the players, it really fires them up and it helps them raise their game.”
