It wasn’t the best performance from the Roesiders - despite scoring five goals and they will be happy to be into the next round.

It was a game had it all; a bagful of goals, two red cards and three penalties awarded and a dubious referee.

Paul Owens, Cathair Friel, Conor Harkin, Gareth Tommons and Mark McGroarty were all on target for the home side, while ex-Institute striker Darren McFadden and Caolan Cooling found the mark for the visitors.

The game exploded into life in the 40th minute, as Trojans were awarded a soft free kick, which was taken quickly and with United sleeping, Mark McLaughlin was given the freedom of the pitch and was clipped by Paul Wells.

The goalkeeper was shown a straight red card and Darren McFadden fired home the resulting spot-kick.

Just before the break Owens levelled things for the cup holders and they took the lead on 49 minutes thanks to Friel’s penalty, but the tie was over as a contest when Trojans goalkeeper McCrudden was sent-off for the challenge. Trojans had no keeper on the bench so Burke had to put the gloves on.

Conor Harkin and Gareth Tommons scored in quick succession just before the hour mark to move United into a 4-1 lead.

Credit to Trojans’ Cooling pulled one back on 87 minutes, but McGroarty completed the rout late on.

Meanwhile Ricky Lee Dougherty fired home Newbuildings United’s winner against Moyola Park and they now entertain Strabane Athletic in the quarter-final.

Institute also have home advantage in the next round when they face Desertmartin and the Roesiders take on Portstewart at Limavady Showgrounds.

All quarter-final ties will take place on Saturday, September 26.
