Rollo’s Rangers edge past Mossley

It was a 2-1 win for Newington Rangers in Saturday’s Division 1C derby with Mossley FC at the Knowe, but manager David Rollo wasn’t entirely happy, classing it as the “worst display” he has seen since he arrived at the club.

His opposite number Campbell Graham said: “I was pleased with the performance, but not the result. We should have been five up at half-time. We were in total control, but couldn’t score.”

On four minutes Mossley’s Kyle Crowe hit the post with keeper Brendan Quinn beaten.

Most of the chances were falling Mossley’s way, with Lee Graham denied by Quinn, and then failing to get on the end of a Gary McCord pass. McCord and Jordan McCune also went close.

Instead it was the home side who showed the way on 53 minutes; Marty Stirling giving keeper Dwayne Jenkins no chance after being set up nicely by Adam McGivern.

Two minutes later Jenkins produced a brilliant stop after John Brown had cut in from the right.

Newington inched further ahead on 59 minutes when Paul Thompson’s shot found a way past Jenkins.

Rangers could have wrapped it up when a Stirling header careered off the post – but instead the visitors were right back in it on 73 minutes, with Kyle Harper re-opening his Mossley account, after Quinn had punched out a right-wing cross.
