Rovers sink FC Whiteabbey

Our weekly round-up of how East Antrim teams fared in the Ballymena and Provincial League.

Intermediate Division: Castle Star broke their duck in intermediate league football when they emerged as 4-2 winners at Killymoon Rangers on Saturday. The majority of the goal action came in the opening 45 minutes with Castle 4-1 up at the break. The home side pulled one back, but the Carrick men held out to claim a precious three points.

Junior Division 1: Tim Campbell put Woodlands one up at home to Cookstown Olympic but goals from Nigel Johnston and Matt Hughes gave the visitors the lead at the break. Olympic looked like they had the game in bag until Chris Pollock popped up with an 89th-minute equaliser for the Carrick outfit.

Magherafelt Sky Blues Reserves had too much for Carnmoney FC, defeating the local team 5-2. Craig Montgomery and Michael Kinlan got Carnmoney’s goals.

Antrim Rovers claimed a 5-1 victory over FC Whiteabbey to go top of the Junior Division One table. A Darryl Brammeld hat-trick, together with goals from Anton Watson and Jamie Jackson, wrapped up a comfortable victory for Rovers at UUJ.

Elsewhere, third-placed Mallusk Athletic recorded a 2-1 win away to Cookstown RBL to move three points clear.

Junior Divison Two: Goals from John Fox, Stephen Bradley and Nial Stewart saw Remo FC get the better of second-bottom Ballyclare North End in a 3-2 win. Robert Bonnes and Ryan Davey netted for North End.

Ballynure OB ‘B’ were on the wrong end of a 9-1 hammering against Sport and Leisure Swifts Reserves.

Junior Division Three: Mountainview and Rathcoole Reserves shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw. Billy Brown and Gareth Peoples were on target for Mountainview, with Ross Blair and Adam Irwin finding the net for Rathcoole.

Whitehead Rangers eased to an 8-2 success against Carnlough Swifts thanks to goals from Phil Hall (2), Glenn Jones (2), Danny Hastings, Michael Hughes, Thomas Tourish, Gary Hastings.

Stuart Thompson’s solitary strike was the difference as Red Star defeated 1st Carrickfergus OB.

Canada Trophy: Krag Albion hit 3rd Ballyclare for six in the first round of the Canada Trophy.

Their goals came courtesy of Lee Lowry, Scott Ward, Matthew McFall, Jackson Griffith, Jamie Montgomery and Jack Lamont.
