Ryan hat-trick helps spring surprise

LURGAN Celtic’s youthful reserve side entertained Fintona Swifts in the Junior Cup last Saturday and after a thrilling see saw battle emerged 5-3 victors.

The visitors had cruel luck when in the opening 15 minutes they hit the post twice with goalkeeper Paddy Lawless beaten. The Hoops stunned the visitors when John McGuigan cut in from the left and scored with a low right foot drive from 25 yards out. The visitors deservedly equalised close to half time. Celtic regained the lead five minutes into the second half through Ciaran Ryan, but back came Fintona to level once more on the hour mark.

Ciaran McCann then put the Hoops ahead for the third time and five minutes later Ryan swivelled in the box to beat the keeper low to his right. After this came a period of pressure from the visitors and five minutes from time they reduced the deficit and continued to pile the pressure onto the Celtic goal in a bid to force extra-time but right on the whistle Ryan completed his hat-trick to wrap up the tie and put the less experienced Hoops into the next round.
