Saints alive in shots bonanza!

THERE must have been something in the half-time cup of tea in last week's Ballymena and District Division Three match at All Saints Parish Centre.

What had been a fairly mundane opening half of the hosts' game against Round Tower exploded into life after the interval where the two rinks produced a remarkable tally of FIFTY shots between them!

Thirty-four of them went the way of the home side, whose four points haul from a 49-32 win takes them to the summit of the table - heady days for a team not ordinarily used to such a lofty position.

Anyone who watched the match between Eugene McReynolds and John O'Neill would have long since run out of fingers and toes to tally up the score, with 31 shots being scored over the 10-end contest.

Eugene's rink were the eventual victors, with two counts of '5' on early ends putting them into a virtually unassailable position, although O'Neill's Round Tower foursome did manage to finish with a '6' on the final end.

On the other mat, Bridie McReynolds' match with Michael Teer was heading for a nail-biting conclusion until Bridie's rink blew their opponents away with a '4' and a '6' on two of the last three ends to win 14-5.

The first half had been a little more sedate, with Gilmore Campbell securing Tower's only point with a 10-7 win over Eugene Walsh, which had been cancelled out by Paddy Martin's 8-6 win for Saints over Kevin McLarnon.

Eaton Park are another side to have made a good start, with their second successive win coming from a two-shot triumph at St Mary's Portglenone.

As the scoreline suggests, there was very little between the sides with Patsy Boyd's 11-8 win for the home side against Ruth Kelly, negated by Bonar Hill's Eaton Park rink 'pointing' against James McCann.

The theme continued after the break with Paul Webb sneaking past John Carruthers by a shot for Mary's second point, but George Reid's 7-5 win over Charlie Graham was enough to tip the overall shots balance in the rugby club's favour.

First Ballymena leap-frogged Golf Seniors at the bottom of the table, thanks to their first points of the season.

The church team led by four shots at the break thanks to wins from David McQuitty and Jean Clarke over DOnald Smyth and Sammy Small.

Lyle McQuitty's 15-7 win over John Nichols effectively put the game beyond the golfers' reach, meaning Campbell Wade's win over Jean Mullan was mere consolation.

In the other game, Enkalon produced a sterling second half comeback to end Glenravel's unbeaten start to the campaign.

The Glensfolk looked on course to build on their maximum points haul from the opening week when wins from Seamus McKeown and Gerry Sands established a seven shots lead at the interval at Antrim Rugby Club.

But the second half totally belonged to Enkalon as wins from John Greenaway and Arnold Woods overhauled Glenravel's earlier efforts leaving the Antrim side winners by three shots.
