Institute Seconds moved up to third place in the NIFL Reserve league on Saturday with a comprehensive 5-1 win over Warrenpoint Res, at the Riverside Stadium.

Stute were by far the better team on the day and they took an early 13th minute lead when Robbie Hume fired home from 12 yards after Ronan Doherty’s initial effort had been blocked.

Eight minutes later Hume almost doubled the lead when he beat the offside trap but lifted the ball over the advancing keeper and agonisingly over the crossbar.

The home side were denied what looked like a certain penalty just before the break when Ben Doherty was barged over inside the box but despite their appeals the referee waved play on.

The Drumahoe men raised the tempo of their game in the second half and had doubled their lead within eight minutes of the restart.

Jamie McIntyre’s corner was met by defender Dean Curry but his powerful header cannoned off the crossbar and down onto the goal line where Gary Henderson reacted quickly to blast the ball into the roof of the net.

Curry played an instrumental role in Stute’s third goal when his towering header set Hume through on goal, Darcey in the Warrenpoint goal could only parry Hume’s effort and the ball fell kindly for Ben Doherty who made no mistake with the follow-up.

As torrential rain engulfed the Riverside, Jude Ballard’s unfortunate slip presented the chance for Mulholland to race clear to beat Stute keeper Marty Gallagher.

Thankfully Institute regained their composure and substitute Jordan Thompson’s dangerous cross was turned home by defender Irwin just as Ryan Varma looked certain to score.

With virtually the last kick of the game Thompson scored the goal of the game, turning well and firing past Darcey from long range.

The Seconds are on their travels this Saturday as they visit Comber Rec in the first round of the Intermediate Cup, (KO 1.30pm).
