Seniors progress in PGL Cup

BALLYMENA Seniors were also in action last Thursday night when Cliftonville were the visitors in the first round of the NIPGL Senior Cup and it was Ballymena Seniors who progressed to the next round after scoring a comfortable 88-62 win.

David Torrington, Andrew Bonnar, Andrew Duncan and Jim Baker made a great start against J McGinn on rink 1 to lead by 17 shots to 1 after only 9 ends however the visitors fought back over the closing ends to leave the score 25-16 in favour of the home rink.

The match on rink 2 was a closer affair where Steven Shields, Graham Wilson, Andrew Morrison and Nigel Robinson took on R Gray. At the half way stage of the game the Ballymena rink held a 4 shot lead but by the seventeenth end the scores were level at 13-13.

The Braid men however won three of the final four ends to claim victory by 17 shots to 14.

David Duncan, James Gaston, Jonathan Millar and Sammy Allen were involved in a very close tussle with P Gillespie on rink 3.

There was never any more that 3 shots in the game and with the visitors winning two of the last three ends it was the Cliftonville rink who claimed a one shot victory by 18 shots to 17.

Steven Falls, JR Nicholl, Jimmy Hodges and Steven Coleman put on a great performance against P Neeson on rink 4. They won four of the opening five ends to lead by 6 shots and at the half way stage of the game the lead had increased to 13 shots.

The remainder of the game was closer, but it was the Ballymena rink who went on to claim an excellent 29-14 victory.

Ballymena Seniors travel to Ulster Transport in the second round of the cup on Thursday, June 10.
