Sharpshooter Nicky is Barn’s goal wizard of Oz

A 4-1 success for Barn United away to Dromara Village and their first win in any competition since a single goal from the now departed Andrew Dummigan gave them the three points at Lisburn Rangers in September.

United’s assistant-manager Robert McKee reflected: “It’s been a while – but it has been coming. Performances have been a lot better of late; things are starting to turn for us and that’s us now three games unbeaten in the league. Our next two at the start of January are massive: away to Dunmurry Rec and then home to UUJ.”

Barn kept faith with the starting 11 that held Downpatrick to a 3-3 draw the week before and they posed the early threat, taking a deserved lead through Gary McKee.

Keith Anderson somehow contrived to divert a Mark Tweedie cross wide from just a few yards in the dying minutes of the half, but it seemed to matter little when Matt McDonald stole in at the back post to finish off a McKee free-kick on 56 minutes.

That was the cue for United to unleash Nicky Sharples off the bench, and it was no surprise when the striker, back from Australia for Christmas, made his mark with his first and possibly only Barn goal of the season, with a typical crisp finish, low and hard into the bottom corner.

Tweedie added a fourth before Dromara notched a consolation five minutes from time.
