The 24-year-old, who can play in a number of positions, is having his second spell at the Brandywell after previously playing with the Candystripes a few years ago.

Sharkey could be joined at the Brandywell with striker Connor Thompson, the young centre-forward is expected to play some part in tomorrow night’s friendly at Coleraine (KO 7.45pm).

Thompson, who came off the bench on Monday evening to score in City’s 2-0 win over Ballinamallard United, played in America with Candystripes winger Stephen Dooley, is spending this week on trial with Derry.

Meanwhile it’s thought that Peter Hutton’s side could be making a bid for Dungannon Swifts’ Jamie Glackin.

The 19-year-old is also tracking the attention of Irish League Premiership league Crusaders as well as cross channel sides Tranmere Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday.
