Shield and cup reprieve for Carniny

CARNINY Rangers attended the IFA Appeals Panel last Monday night to appeal against the decision that their player Leslie McCaughran was an ineligible player when he played in the Junior Cup Quarter Final and their subsequent dismissal from the Coca Cola Junior Cup Semi Final.

On Wednesday they received the great news that their appeal had been upheld and McCaughran was not classed as an ineligible player and they were reinstated to the Junior Cup.

The Co Antrim FA were awaiting this decision to decide if Carniny Rangers could continue in the Junior Shield and have now arranged the Paddy Power Junior Shield Semi-Final for this Thursday, April 22, which means the BSML postponed the Arkmedia sponsored O'Kane Cup Final which was to be played tonight (Tuesday, April 20) to a later date.

Carniny now play Ardoyne WMC at Inver Park, Larne on Thursday in the Paddy Power Junior Shield Semi Final with a 7.30pm kick-off.

The following Thursday, April 29, Carniny meet Immaculata in the Coca Cola Junior Cup Semi Final at Dixon Park Ballyclare, again with a 7.30pm kick-off in their chase for what would be an amazing double.

SAMMY MOORE TROPHY

Dunloy Athletic 9, Randalstown 2: Dunloy have almost guaranteed their place in the final of the Sammy Moore Trophy with this 9-2 thrashing of Randalstown in the first leg of the semi-final.

It took Dunloy until 15 minutes to take the lead when a long ball out of defence by Kevin Martin was controlled by Chris Smiley who then fired home from 18 yards.

Randalstown hit back soon after when Andy Highman found the net with a volley from 20 yards out.

Dunloy regained their lead when Stephen Dooey outpaced the Randalstown defence to score and make it 2-1. It was 3-1 just before the break when Barry McGonigle rose highest to head home a John Paul McQuillan corner kick.

Randalstown came out a determined side after the break and they made it 3-2 10 minutes in when a Stephen Dripps free kick from 40 yards deceived everyone and found the corner of the net.

Dunloy made it 4-2 on the hour mark when Dooey pounced on an error at the back to fire home. After this Dunloy ran riot as Smiley made it five when he beat a defender before slotting the ball home then substitute Nigel Elliott made it 6-2 with a long range drive.

Barry Murphy got in on the act when he got on the end of a Mark McFadden ball to fire home. Dooey completed his hat trick when he headed home the eighth from a Chris Brogan cross field ball and then late on Smiley made it 9-2 and completed his hat trick after a goal mouth scramble.

Wakehurst Athletic 1, Westend Athletic 1: This Harryville Derby finished in deadlock so the second leg this Saturday will determine who qualifies for the final.

It was Westend who took the lead ten minutes before half-time, with the best bit passage of play in the half, when some good passing football by Gary McIlroy and Mark Watson allowed Stephen Calderwood to run through and knock the ball over the advancing Wakehurst keeper Andrew Steele.

Wakehurst came out hungrier in the second half and deservedly got back on level terms mid-way through the second half, when a Jason Mitchell shot from the corner of the penalty box evaded everyone and went into the corner of the net to set up a tense second leg.

Demesne Star 3, Waveney Swifts 2: This was the big Cup upset of the day with third Division Demesne Star knocking out second division opponents Waveney.

Demesne had the better of the early exchanges but it was Paul Craig who opened the scoring for Waveney in the 38th minute, unleashing a long range effort which flew into the top right hand corner.

Demesne showed more urgency in the second half and in the 58th minute the ball dropped to Michael Ross in the Waveney penalty area and he made no mistake in levelling the score.

Demesne then went ahead on 70 minutes when a mistake by Waveney defence allowed Jordan Bamber to somehow scramble the ball home.

Swifts threw everything at Demesne and on 83 minutes a cross from Darren Wilson rebounded off the crossbar from Ernie Corry to knock the ball home which Demesne claimed was not over the line but the referee deemed it had crossed the line and the sides were level.

Both teams looked set for extra time when Demesne's Darren McNeilly was fouled inside the Waveney penalty area a minute from the end and Kieran O'Boyle stepped up to send his team into the next round of the cup and a home tie against another Division Two side Braid United.

BSML DIVISION ONE

FC Moylena 5, All Saints OB 1: Moylena took the lead within five minutes when Nathan Wilson finished crisply from five yards after good approach play from the left.

Saints equalised on 15 minutes when Stephen Tully rose highest to head home a Ryan Brady free kick but Moylena regained the lead 10 minutes later when striker Brian McDonald dispatched his effort from close range.

Goal of the match came five minutes into the second half. Nathan Wilson broke clear on the right on the half way line. After advancing 15 yards he opted to shoot and his bullet effort soared over the helpless Timmy Connelly and in off the crossbar.

With just under 10 minutes left Moylena had a free kick after a foul on Keith McCrea. Paul Milliken floated the ball into the box and it was Keith McCrea who glanced his header in.

Moylena added to Saints' misery when Brian McDonald headed in number five just before the final whistle.

BSML DIVISION TWO

Broadway Celtic 4, FC Penarol 1: Celtic now need only one win to confirm their promotion back to Division One at the first attempt.

The home side made their early superiority count on 10 minutes when Brian Maybin skipped past three Penarol defenders before slotting the ball into the corner of the net.

Penarol did get level on 32 minutes when Darren Cumming was upended in the penalty box and a penalty was awarded. Cummings stepped up and sent Celtic keeper Stephen Elliot the wrong way to make it 1-1.

Celtic got the perfect start to the second half when they regained their lead just six minutes in when Brian Maybin nipped in at the near post to head home a Darren Burgoyne corner kick.

After this goal Celtic were in complete control and made it 3-1 on the hour mark when Garrth Gordon raced clear only for his effort to be blocked by Colin McCaughern in the Penarol goal, but the ball fell to Brian Maybin who fired home to complete his hat trick.

Celtic sealed all three points with 17 minutes to go when neat interchange by Brian Maybin and Paul O'Neill set up Thomas Agnew who found the top corner.
