Shiels scores debut goal

ONLY one week after signing for Rangers, Upperlands man Dean Shiels has already made his mark for the Ibrox side.

In his first start for his new club, Shiels grabbed the headlines with a stunning goal in the 33rd minute of their Scottish League Cup tie against Division two side East Fife.

Rangers ran out 4-0 winners in their first home game since the club formed as Newco.

Manager Ally McCoist was full of praise for his new signing.

“I’m delighted that we managed to sign one of the best players in Scotland last season. It is really encouraging that these sort of players want to come here.”

Shiels returns to action for Rangers this weekend as they travel north to face Peterhead in their opening league fixture.

The former Arsenal trainee was also named in Michael O’Neills 23 man squad for Northern Irelands up and coming friendly fixture against Finland at Windsor Park. Shiels is joined in the squad by Cookstown footballer Aaron Hughes.
