Sierra Leone miss out in their brave World Cup bid

Former Lisburn Distillery coach, Johnny McKinstry, has failed in his bid to take Sierra Leone to the World Cup finals.

The 27-year-old made headlines when he replaced experienced Swedish coach, Lars-Olaf Mattsson, as manager of the West African team in April when he became the world’s youngest international manager.

He had hoped to lead his team to the World Cup but a 2-2 draw with Tunisia and a 1-0 defeat by Cape Verde in recent weeks meant Sierra Leone would not be playing in the final round of African qualifying.

A goalkeeping error in both these games cost Sierra Leone dearly, though McKinstry is expected to still be in charge in September when Sierra Leone play Equitorial Guinea in the final qualifier when his contract is due to expire.
