Simpson’s boys lose to oldrivals

NEWBUILDINGS United suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at neighbours Oxford United Stars, on Saturday.

Both sides before the game had 100 per cent records in this years Pharmacy League Cup which meant something had to give.

The game started with both sides cancelling each other out and both defences on top.

The first opportunity came on 20 minutes when Scanlon blazed over from eight yards after Curry’s corner had picked him out.

The second half started with the home side on top and they deserved to take the lead on the hour mark when good play down the left seen an inch perfect cross meet by the on-rushing Darren Crossan.

Ten minutes later it was 2-0, again neat build up play in midfield resulted in a thunderous finish by Adam Clarke, again leaving Wilson in the Newbuildings goal with no chance.

Instead of this sparking Newbuildings into live it was the home side who continued to look the more dangerous in attack.

With five minutes remaining the visitors created there first real opportunity of the day, the keeper made a good save when Dougherty was through on goal and from the rebound the lively young Riddles, on his debut, blazed just wide.

Deep into injury time Gary Simpson’s men did manage to score when good work from Curry down the right resulted in the Oxford centre half diverting into his own net.

Meanwhile the Reserves recorded a second straight win in the league with Clarke and Robinson both netting a brace each in a 4-2 home win over Tullyally. This weekend the first team are home to Dungiven and the Reserves travel to Ardmore.
