Slane leave Wellington Rec-ed after top display

Moneyslane goal-scorers Gregg Harrison, Bran Quilty and Mark Ervine looking pleased at full-time.

A brace each for Mark Ervine and Gregg Harrison along with one for Brian Quilty ensure the locals cruise on in the historic competition.

Stevie Coulter was ineligible and Jordan Fairley was working but Slane did welcome back skipper Gareth Bingham after a lengthy injury.

Moneyslane started well and the pressure paid off after 20 minutes when Quilty played a one-two with Ervine before finding the bottom corner.

The home team rallied and forced a series of corners in their search for the equaliser.

After their keeper saved an Ervine drive from close range, they got back on levelled terms as a free-kick was blocked by Blevins but the ball rebounded off an attacker and over the line. With their tails up, the home team looked lively and caused some problems for the Slane defence.

Slane then got back on top with some really good football with Harrison, Quilty and Whitten linking up particularly down the right.

A good corner from Anderson saw a defender head on to his own bar and then Ervine headed just over from the resultant corner.

Harrison rounded the keeper and cut the ball back for Ervine and his drive was somehow blocked by the sprawling stopper. Right on half time, Slane took the lead when Bingham’s shot from 25 yards thumped back off the post and the alert Ervine fired home.

The third arrived after the break and it was a real beauty. Harrison beat his man on the right and found Quilty who pinged a 40 yard pass to Ervine on the left channel. His cross was headed home by the diving Harrison 12 yards out.

The home team were not finished yet and only a great block by Blevins kept the two goal advantage. Then another excellent goal came when after a dozen passes Ervine ran on to a slipped ball and hammered home to make it 4-1.

Adair came on for Anderson, Steen for Bingham and Jason Fairley for Ervine as the away team took their foot of the gas a little and were punished when a through ball saw the home striker find the top corner.

However, it was the away team that had the final word with yet another top drawer goal. After a long spell of possession, Steen slipped the ball into Harrison who drew the keeper and coolly slotted home to cap a fine individual performance.
