Slane lose out to league leaders

Moneyslane Firsts narrowly lost out 1-0 to Intermediate B league leaders Newry City AFC.

Twelve minutes in and the home side went ahead. Shane Lundy spread the ball wide to David Anderson who was wasn’t picked up on the over lapping run. He raced to the by-line and whipped in a cross to the edge of the six yard box. City captain Chris McMahon met it with his well-timed run and he hammered the ball into the roof of the net, giving Adam Rowland no chance in the Slane goal.

On the half hour a Slane lapse at back let Walker in up the right and he passed to Graeme Edgar who shot low to bottom corner but Rowland made a great save with an out stretched arm to keep the score at 1-0.

Andy Moore was fiery in midfield throwing in some hefty challenges and Ally Quinn and Mark Ervine were holding strong at the back thwarting any Newry attack. In fact Rowland had very little to contend with as the Newry strikers were given no room to manoeuvre.

The large number of spectators were hoping for a better second half as they had very little to get excited about so far, there was no width or creativity from either side in the first 45.

Chris Kerr’s wee flick over Newry defence released Stevie Adair who unleashed a great shot but it was saved by Murphy as Slane upped the tempo after the break.

Neither side could create a clear cut chance in the last ten minutes and Killian Kerr blew up for the final whistle much to the relief and delight on the Newry supporters.

Man of the match for Slane was young 17 year old Adam Rowland who was a solid structure in nets for Slane.
