Slane shoot-out success in Marshall Cup second round

On Saturday past Moneyslane entertained Lurgan Town at Crystal Park, Banbridge in the second round of the Marshall Cup.

Slane started the brighter of the two and it looked as if it was going to be a handy enough afternoon as they dominated the pace of the game in the opening 10 minutes. They came close to breaking the deadlock with Gareth Bingham and John Whitten both having efforts on goal.

Lurgan had chances of their own, on one occasion hitting wide and the other David Boyd making a great last minute tackle.

Slane still had the upper hand and were playing some neat football but couldn’t quite find the killer ball in the final third.

On 40 minutes Tommy Lockhart received the ball about 30 yards out, dinked right then back onto his favoured left and pinged it into the top left hand corner.

Lockhart had another effort on the stroke of the half, this time on his right foot, but could only find the crossbar.

The second half was a different affair with ‘Town coming out all guns blazing and ‘Slane’s defence all at sea. With only three minutes of the half played Lurgan had the ball in the net after their centre forward nodded home a free header from six yards.

Five minutes into extra time and Lurgan side were still the better team and when Mark Ervine brought down the ‘Town striker just inside the area the ref pointed to the spot but they failed to convert much to the delight of the ‘Slane support.

Lurgan kept attacking and got their breakthrough through with another header. When all looked lost for ‘Slane in the dying minutes of extra time up popped McKee who pounced when there was a mix up between the keeper and centre half and headed home, and sent the game for penalties.
