Small focused on Carrick despite Cliftonville link

CARRICK Rangers boss Stephen Small this week said he is focused on the job in hand at Taylor’s Avenue despite being linked with the vacant manager’s post at Premiership side Cliftonville.

The managerial role is up for grabs at Solitude following the weekend sacking of Eddie Patterson.

And, as a former long-serving player and one of the Belfast side’s most popular ever defenders, Small is an obvious name in the frame.

“I suppose it’s natural enough for people to make the connection,” he said. “But it hasn’t ever crossed my mind to do anything other than what I’m doing right now, which is thoroughly enjoying this project; to progress Carrick Rangers as far as we possibly can.”

Small, an ex-assistant manager at the Reds, added: “I won’t say I’m unhappy about people making the link, it’s flattering. But I’m really enjoying the job I’m doing and Cliftonville have no relevance in my immediate future.”
