SML teams make Junior Shield progress

AFTER the disappointment of early exits in the Junior Cup, Ballymena Saturday Morning League sides showed their teeth in Saturday's opening round of the Paddy Power County Antrim Junior Shield.

No fewer than nine SML clubs took their place in the round two draw after wins on Saturday, where they will hope to be joined by more of their colleagues, who begin their Shield campaigns this weekend.

CO ANTRIM JUNIOR SHIELD

All Saints OB 5, Valley Rangers 0: Saints turned in a superb display to see off Newcastle and District Premier Division side Valley Rangers.

Saints went a goal in front on 18 minutes when Chris Smiley broke the play up in midfield and the ball came to Eoin Hudson who split the Rangers defence for Aidan O'Kane who beat the offside trap before rounding the keeper to score.

Six minutes later it was 2-0 when an Aidan O'Kane corner kick resulted in a Rangers defender handling the ball and a penalty kick was awarded. Ryan Lyness stepped up and made no mistake from the spot.

Saints all but made the tie safe five minutes before the break when a deep Brian Watt cross found Chris Smiley at the back post and he controlled and fired home to make it 3-0 at the break.

Saints made it 4-0 on 65 minutes when Chris Smiley played in Eoin Hudson down the right and his cross was volleyed home by Ryan Lyness from eight yards out.

The fifth goal came 12 minutes from time when substitute Gerard Spurgeon played a sublime ball into the path of Kieran McKeown who hammered the ball home to complete the scoring and send Saints safely into the next round where they will face an away trip to the winners of Comber Star/Kircubbin.

Suffolk FC 1, Waveney Swifts 2: Waveney Swifts travelled to Amateur League 2A side Suffolk and came away with a hard fought victory.

Swifts started well and eventually opened the scoring on 15 minutes. A throw in by Ryan McFadden was half cleared to the edge of the box where William McNabb was on home to smash the ball home via the post.

The home side drew level on the hour mark when the ball snuck home at the back post.

Swifts then took control of the game and struck the winner 15 minutes from time. Rodney Beggs knocked a ball over the top of the Suffolk defence for Ciaran Lemon to race onto and he coolly put the ball through the keeper's legs to make it 2-1.

Westend Athletic 3, Kashmir Bilbao 2: Kashmir, from West Belfast, started the stronger team, and were rewarded early on when a cross from the left wing was knocked in at the back post.

Westend debutant Andy Kirkpatrick then scored the equaliser as he broke from defence, and battled to keep control of the ball, before playing a one-two and firing past the Kashmir goalkeeper.

Westend went in front when Mark Watson surged forward from midfield before playing a great ball to Rab Andrews who ran on to slot past the keeper.

Westend started the second half as they left the first and soon extended their lead, as a cross from the left found Evan Forsythe to score at the back post.

Westend seemed comfortable as this stage, however Kashmir got a goal back from a corner as the ball broke and was forced over the line at the back post.

The match became scrappy, however Westend managed to hang on to go into the next round, at home to the winners of Glenpark or PSNI Olympic

Templepatrick 2, Dunmurry Rec II 1: Templepatrick go into the next round with an historic victory over Dunmurry Rec II, but they did it the hard way, coming from behind and playing with ten men for most of the second half.

In a tight first half Dunmurry scored from a long throw that was flicked in at the near post right just before half time,

Templepatrick suffered another major blow when they had a defender sent off two minutes into the second half for pulling down a Dunmurry forward as he broke through on goal.

This put the home side under the cosh for the rest of the game but didn't stop them levelling things up on the counter attack. A long kick from keeper Mickey Steele found Stefan Getty who held the ball up well, and as the visitors' defence backed off he fired a great chip from 25 yards into the net.

Templepatrick suddenly had the belief to go on and win the game and did exactly that when Scott Carnwath headed home a Stefan Getty corner with only 5 minutes to go.

Templepatrick now have a home draw against the winners of St Oliver Plunkett or Wakehurst Athletic.

Other BSML Teams to go through were Ballykeel, Carniny Rangers, FC Inter Stars, Glenarm Rovers and Michelin.

ARKMEDIA CUP, ROUND THREE

Harryville Homers 2, FC Moylena 2 (Homers win 5-3 on pens): Homers were one minute from going out of the Arkmedia Cup until substitute Keith Wylie snatched a dramatic equaliser in extra time and Homers won on penalties.

Alan Rainey had been sent on as a substitute at the start of the second half and his first touch was to guide a header past Moylena keeper William Glover when he connected with a brilliant cross from Gordon Mairs.

Moylena gradually started to come more into the game and they got an equaliser 10 minutes from time when Stephen Wilson made a break on the right and played the ball through the middle of the Homers defence for Neil Stevenson to knock the ball past advancing Homers keeper Richard Atcheson.

Moylena took the lead in the first period of extra time when Johnny Jordan took advantage of a defensive mix up to score a minute before half time.

Homers sent on Keith Wylie in the second period of extra time and he collected the ball on the edge of the penalty area to rifle a thunderbolt of a shot into the bottom corner of the net with his less-favoured right foot to level the tie and send it into penalties.

Homers keeper saved Moylena's first penalty and with all the rest of the penalties being converted it was up to Gary Bonnes to hit Homers' fifth penalty and he slotted the ball home to send Harryville into the quarter-finals.

Connor FC 3, Broadway Celtic 0: Connor set up a quarter final tie with Ballykeel after a 3-0 victory over their old rivals Broadway Celtic.

The home side got off to a perfect start when they took the lead after only eight minutes when Ally McIlroy was on hand to hammer the ball home after some good play from Christopher O'Hara. Connor doubled their lead 12 minutes before the break when an Alan Telford corner kick was volleyed home by Alan Norton from six yards out.

The game was then delayed for almost half an hour due to a serious leg break for Celtic player David Fusco. When the match resumed, Connor struck the all important third goal to seal their place in the last eight 15 minutes from time when a flowing move involving several Connor players resulted in Alan Telford picking out Ally McIlroy to head home.

Broadway Celtic would like to thank the officials of Connor FC who helped the injured David Fusco and showed great consideration until he was removed in the ambulance. All involved would also like to wish David a speedy recovery.

The revised Arkmedia Cup quarter-final draw now reads: Connor FC v Ballykeel; Cullybackey Olympic v Seven Towers; Harryville Homers v Carniny Rangers; All Saints OB v Waveney Swifts.
