Soccer Sevens a big success

Easter Monday saw the fifth annual Larne Youth Soccer Sevens take place at Sandy Bay, Larne.

Ninety-seven teams from across Northern Ireland took part at the event and the morning session was filled with teams from the following ages groups: under-8 (2007), under-10 (2005), under-12 (2003) and under-14 (2001), who all put on a great show in their matches for the large crowds.

Winners for the age groups were: (2007) St Oliver Plunkett who beat Carnmoney FDC; (2005) Bertie Peacock Youth who defeated Carrick Rangers; (2003) St Oliver Plunkett got the better of Carrick Rangers and (2001) Larne Youth emerged victorious against Causeway Colts.

Presentations were made to runners-up and winners by the Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, Mr Billy Ashe, and councillor Ruth Wilson.

The afternoon sections were in under-9 (2006), under-11 (2004) and under-13 (2000) when, again, everyone enjoyed the competitive football on show.

Winners for the age groups were: (2006) Roe Valley (runners-up Sion Swifts); (2004) Strathroy Harps (runners-up Sion Swifts) and (2002) TW Braga (runners-up Ballymoney United Youth).

Larne Youth would like to thank ACTIVAS UK Ltd Larne and Joanne McNeill for their sponsorship of the tournament, the qualified referees who officiated all matches throughout the day, St John Ambulance (Larne), Larne Rugby Club, Wes Gregg IFA Officer, Brake Brothers Ltd, Larne Borough Council, especially Mr Neil Steward and his workforce, Mr James Morton and Mr Joey Barr and all the helpers and volunteers who gave the club great assistance throughout the day.

A club spokesperson said: “Their help was invaluable in making the tournament a major success and one that many teams add into their football calendar each year.”
