Something in the water at Aquinas

AFTER last’s weeks defeat Iveagh Thistle were determined to bounce back against Belfast team Aguinas who presently sit one place above them in the South Belfast U13 League.

Thistle straight from the kick off pushed Aquinas back and nearly got off to the perfect start with a great passing move retaining possession which culminated in an opening for McCavitt who brought a good save out of the home keeper.

Immediately Aquinas showed their main strength as they feed the ball to their tall robust striker who muscled his way in on keeper Hunter who saved brilliantly at his feet.

Thistle maintained their pressure and created chances with a Carroll header which was saved, and moments later another precise move ended with Gallagher firing over the bar from the edge of the box.

On 15 minutes Aquinas went one up when again they fed their strong striker who this time, after holding off the defensive challenges fired home.

Thistle responded five minutes later when Moore won a header in midfield, his flick on was picked up by Carroll who rounded his marker and played in McCavitt, who struck to the top corner. The game was now end to end but it was Aquinas who scored next with a dubiously awarded free kick on the edge of the box which was driven over the wall into the net. Just on half time when Thistle were pushing for the equaliser they were caught out at the back again with the rampant striker scoring again, which was a real blow for the locals going into the break.

As the second half started, even though 3-1 down, Thistle still had belief in getting points from the match and kept playing their passing brand of football.

Moments later they were 4-1 down as once again they had succumbed to Aquinas’ strong striker who scored his hat trick.

Thistle kept pressing and a life line looked a certainty when striker Carroll slipped passed his man in the box and with the keeper approaching lobbed the ball, which unfortunately hit the bar, follow up striker Russell fired first time goal bound effort seemed to be handled off the line by the defender but to Thistle’s dismay the referee waved play on.
