Sports Council awards

The Derry District Sports Council will have its awards ceremony on February 17. Sports Council chairman, Mr Michael Hutton and the Mayor Alderman Maurice Devenney has appealed for eveyone to get right behind the ceremony.

The Mayor said: “I fully support the work done by the District Sports Council to promote sport and encourage a healthy lifestyle. The annual sports awards are an important event in the local sports calendar and I wish them every success.”

Sports Council chairman Mr Hutton commented: “In terms of sports events this one is unique, as not only does it enable us to acknowledge the effort, commitment and achievements of so many of our athletes from age 10 to senior citizen but it also affords us the opportunity to recognise the contribution of so many.”

There will be 20 awards bestowed on the sporting public. All sports are catered for and although there can only be one winner in any given sporting category the Sports Council are encouraging as many nominations as possible. Mr Hutton said: “ there can only be one winner but for an athlete to know that his/her coach, manager or team mates thought enough of him or her to put forward a nomination says so much to that athlete.”

Mr Hutton also wanted the athletes to nominate a coach or manager for their role in local sport. There are awards for coaching and services to sport. A lot of the work and dedication that many coaches put in goes unnoticed but this is a great opportunity for athletes to show their own appreciation.

Nominations are particularly encouraged for these awards as Michael Hutton highlighted: “None of us could have achieved what we have done in life without the support of others.”

Nomination forms can be obtained from Karen Dillon, Derry City Council Development Office on 71365151. Forms are also available from local leisure centres and online at www.derrycity.gov.uk/sportsawards.

All nominations must be returned by 12noon on Friday, January 27.
