STEEL CUP: Students teach Islanders a lesson

Comeback of the weekend surely belongs to UUJ, who, without a win this season, were tumbling towards a Steel Cup exit, three down at the break against Premier Division side Islandmagee at Wilbourne Park.

After Mike Dunn and Tony McCune (two) found the net for the home side, Jordanstown boss Brian O’Neill took drastic action with a double substitution at the break - including a change of goalkeeper.

Goals from Brian himself and Robert McIlhome saw them start to scale the summit, which was made all the more difficult after Gerard Mailey was shown a second yellow. However, the 10 men came back to level through Donal Faulkner before Johnny Magennis grabbed the winner three minutes from time.

Also celebrating their first victory of the season, after a draw and four consecutive defeats, were Barn United; 5-0 winners away to Division 1B side Ballynahinch United. Barn’s marksmen were Andy Kane (two), Warren Brown (two) and Matt McDonald.

It was comfortable, too, for Nortel at home to Groomsport, even if it took them half an hour to set the wheels rolling through Chris Monteith - before cantering home thanks to further goals from Jordan Clarke (three), Adam Richmond, Mark Wilkinson and substitute Adam Irwin.

Wellington Rec have now won six out of six, but manager Stephen Donald considered this 3-2 victory at home to Dunloy as the toughest of the lot with the pivotal moment coming when Andy Waide saved a penalty 10 minutes into the second half, with keeper Brendan Quinn sent off and the tie balanced at 2-2.

Josh McAllister scored the winner for the 10 men 15 minutes from time; Waide and Dean Shaw were their other marksmen.

Meanwhile, Larne Tech OB maintained their good record over Crumlin United at Dennis Harvey Park, with a 4-0 win. Man of the match Gary Montgomery (two), Chris Steele and Lee Thompson (penalty) got their goals.

Also through are Rathfern Rangers, 3-0 winners at the Diamond over Dunmurry YM. All the goals came in the second half; David Montgomery setting them on their way, while Gary Orr added two more after Dunmurry’s Colin Magill was sent off.

Out though go Mossley, beaten 4-1 by Glentoran II at The Oval. Lee Graham got their goal.

And in Division 1C, 18th Newtownabbey lost 5-1 away to Shorts. Ross Hanna scored.
