Steele sets sights high

This time last year Steele arrived at Rangers from Amateur League side Islandmagee as an understudy to the experienced Robert Robinson. But after a string of solid displays in the second half of the season, he has made the position his own.

Steele has been a Carrick fan since he was a boy and now he has his heart set on picking up silverware with his local club.

“When I was a kid I was a ball boy at Carrick Rangers,” he told the Times. “My hero was Paul Miskelly and I would come down and collect the ball for him, look up to him. I wanted to be a keeper. Now, to play for my hometown team is absolutely amazing.”

“But it’s not just that I am happy to be here; I want to win stuff. In the past some have been happy to say they are playing here. I don’t just want to play for the team, I want us to be able to win stuff and to be able to take this team [forward]. “

He added: “Whenever I used to come down and watch Carrick (as a kid), they were playing in the County Antrim Shield, they were in the Irish Cup and they were beating Glentoran and Linfield.

“I am going to strive and work as hard as I can and I know the gaffer is working hard behind closed doors to get the best players in to be able to do that.”
