Striker Burrowsleaves for Ards

STRIKER Matty Burrows will be leaving Glenavon in January and is to join Championship One high flyers Ards.

Burrows has made just four starts since signing a new contract at Mourneview Park in the summer and with Derry City’s record goal-scorer Mark Farren set to join in January, opportunities were going to be even more limited.

He has therefore opted to follow defender Robbie White through the exit door after the former Larne man was released from his amateur contract earlier this month. Boss Gary Hamilton doesn’t expect any further departures but isn’t ruling out more signings next month.

“Matty wants to play games and I’ve told my players that if that’s the case, I won’t stand in their way,” Hamilton said.

“Matty is 27 and wants to be playing every week. The only way he’s going to get that is by going to another club.

“If we keep Matty, then I think it might hinder the young lads like Brendan Bennett, Robbie McDade and even Andrew Mitchell.

“I don’t expect anyone else to leave and if I don’t get anyone else in then I’ll be happy. Mark Farren is a great addition to an already great squad. All of our players are coming back from injuries now too. Brendan Shannon should be back in three or four weeks and Eddie McCallion and Marc Brown are back in the squad.

“If we can add someone else then that would be great but if not, then I’m happy with what we have.”

Matt Crossan, Farren’s team-mate at Derry City, featured in Glenavon’s friendly victory over Loughgall a few weeks ago and Hamilton says he is still interested in talking to the midfielder.

“It was left with him to come back to us. If he comes back to us then I’d like to see him playing a couple more times. He played well in the friendly but you could see that he wasn’t totally fit so I’d like to see him again. We’ll have to see if he comes back to us.”

Rumours have also linked Crusaders’ young winger Matthew Snoddy with a loan move to Mourneview Park.

“He’s a good young player and if he was available, then I’d definitely be interested in him,” added Hamilton. “However, I haven’t contacted Crusaders or the player himself. Nothing has been said and I don’t know where the rumours have come from,” he said.
