'Stute book cup final spot

INSTITUTE booked their place in the Coca/Cola Intermediate Cup Final, following their comfortable 2-1 win over Dergview, last night.

The Drumahoe club, who now face either Newry City or Larne in the final, raced into a two goal lead in the first half and in truth they could and probably should have won by a bigger margin.

'Stute missed a golden opportunity to take the lead on 21 minutes, a super piece of skill by Michael McCrudden created the chance.

The midfielder got away from his marker before playing a defence splitting pass to find Davitt Walsh, but the striker's tame side footed effort from 12 yards was easily gathered by Dergview keeper Stefan McCusker.

Institute did take the lead three minutes later in spectacular fashion.

Sean Roddy's free-kick on the right hand edge of the box, after Paddy McLaughlin was upended by Jonathan McCaskie, was superbly curled over the wall and despite McCusker's best attempts to keep it out, the ball hit the bar and went in.

Soon after former Institute man Ryan Campbell went close to levelling things but his low drive from just inside the box was saved at the second attempt by 'Stute keeper Marty Gallagher.

The Waterside men deservedly doubled their lead on 35 minutes when McLaughlin's teasing centre found Neil Harkin and the midfielder made no mistake drilling the ball home.

Right on the stroke of half-time a misplaced pass by keeper McCusker was pounced on by Ryan Semple, he found McCrudden inside the box, but the keeper made up for his mistake by tipping the midfielder's well hit drive over the bar.

Just after the hour mark some neat skill by McCrudden saw him get in behind the visitors defence, but the Waterside man's toe poke shot was saved by McCusker.

Dergview were awarded a soft penalty on 70 minutes when Dean Jarvis handled inside the box after he mis-judged a high ball and Campbell made no mistake with the resulting spot-kick.

Minutes later Roddy went close to adding a third with another long range free-kick, this time McCusker did well to keep the effort out.
