'Stute close on ex-City striker

INSTITUTE manager John Gregg is closing in on striker Vinny Sweeney.

The Waterside man, who was released from Derry City a few weeks ago, has been training with the Drumahoe club and Gregg is hopeful he'll be adding one more additions to his squad before the deadline.

However its thought that Carling Premiership side Lisburn Distillery and fellow Championship side and near neighbours Limavady United are also tracking the Gobnascale man.

"People keep telling me about the baggage which comes with Vinny, but as far as I'm concerned he's a model professional, he trains just as hard as anyone and gives his all on a pitch and that's all what concerns me," he said.

"I have been talking to Vinny for quite a few weeks and although I know a few other clubs have also been talking to him, I'm hopeful we can get something sorted out."

'Stute face Carrick Rangers next Monday night (KO 8pm) and despite losing their open game of the season Gregg is confident his young side can be challenging for honours this year.

Supporters of the Waterside men have been voicing their concerns that it will take at least two campaigns for their side to return to the Premiership, because they have such a young group of players in their squad.

However the Coleraine man doesn't agree and he's convinced when the likes of Ruairi McClean, Ryan Semple and Thomas Wray all return that can only help his squad.

"Everyone knows the reasons why we have such a young squad and I agree 100 per cent with those reasons, and yes I have also heard what supporters and other people feel that we the squad is too young, but I strongly believe after watching our game on Saturday at Bangor that we aren't too far away," he added.

"Yes we lost at Bangor, but for the first 30 minutes or so we played very well, in fact were the better side and I feel with a bit more experience coming back into our squad in the next few weeks then we'll be alright.

"We had over half a dozen young lads who played in our Foyle Cup side, who started at Bangor and as I have said they did alright.

"I'm convinced whenever we have the likes of Thomas Wray, Ruairi McClean and Ryan Semple back then we'll be up their challenging."
