Super Marriott dumps McAuley Cup holders

MARK Marriott was a hat-trick hero as Connor Fc dumped George McAuley Cup holders Michelin out of this year's competition at the first hurdle on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Carniny Rangers are the league's only remaining representatives in the Paddy Power County Antrim Junior Shield after Abbeyview were eliminated on penalties, while Harryville Homers assumed leadership of Division with a win at Holywell.

GEORGE MCAULEY CUP

Michelin 2, Connor FC 4: Connor opened the scoring on 20 minutes when Darren Campbell was fouled before feeding Mervyn Crawford who was given the advantage to play on by the referee and he slipped the ball through to Mark Marriott who fired low into the bottom corner of the net.

This spurred Michelin into action and a long ball by Leroy Kennedy was collected by Roy Davidson who was fouled on the edge of the penalty area and Michelin were awarded a free kick. Davidson took the kick and saw his powerful shot come off a defender and finish in the back of the net.

Connor regained the lead 12 minutes from half time when Darren Campbell collected the ball 40 yards out before weaving his way past four defenders only to be brought down by the Michelin keeper and Connor were awarded a penalty kick. Marriott scored his second goal with a well placed spot kick to send Connor in ahead at half time.

Connor dominated the start of the second half but it was Michelin who scored an equaliser on a breakaway. Robert Caughey broke up a Connor attack and played a long ball for Gary Aiken who raced down the left before sending in an inch perfect cross for Davidson to power home a header.

Michelin's lead was short lived because Connor stormed back 10 minutes later and were awarded another penalty when Jamie White was upended in the penalty area. Again Marriott stepped up and deposited the spot kick into the Michelin net.

Connor's all important fourth goal came 12 minutes from time when Darren Campbell collected a loose clearance in the penalty area and hammered the ball into the Michelin net to ensure Connor's place in the second round.

Ahoghill Thistle 1, Seven Towers 2 (aet): The first real chance came after a goal mouth scramble at the Thistle end when the ball fell to Keith Miskella and with the Ahoghill keeper Richard Tennant only to beat he hit the post and Thistle cleared off the line.

From their next attack, Towers grabbed the opening goal. Simon Murray was released down the left and his cross was met by Miskella at the back post to make it 1-0.

Thistle drew level just before the break when Brian Neill split the Towers defence for Philip Dickey to race clear and fire home.

Towers had a great chance to win it in ordinary time but Brett McLaughlin has his effort well saved.

Five minutes into extra time Towers took the lead when Simon Murray scored a goal that would grace any game. He got onto a ball down the left and having gave his marker the slip he hit a half volley from outside the edge of the box over the keeper into the corner of the net - a wonder goal which was enough to send Towers into the next round.

In the other tie played Blackstone Rovers also progressed into the second round with a 3-2 win at Clough Rangers.

PADDY POWER JUNIOR SHIELD

Carniny Rangers are now the only BSML Team in the Quarter Finals of the Junior Shield when Abbeyview were eliminated from the competition on penalties by Moat Park Rangers.

Abbeyview were 2-1 up with ten minutes to go when the home team equalised and sent the match into extra time.

Extra time failed to produce a winner so the tie went to penalties and in a marathon shootout, the home team won 9-8.

BSML DIVISION ONE

Holywell 0, Harryville Homers 1: Homers go top of Division One and should have won this match with a greater score only for brilliant goalkeeping by Seamus Melly in Holywell's goal.

The visitors took the game to Holywell but had to wait until the half hour mark to open the scoring and it came from the penalty spot.

Keith Wylie was upended in the penalty area and Homers were awarded a penalty kick which Ian Millar took and slotted into the corner of the net.

Melly then produced several great saves to keep the score to the minimum. One of these saves was a brilliant finger tip save from a John McDowell header but the best was the save he made from Jason Stevenson late on when he somehow turned Jason Stevenson's shot around the post.

BSML DIVISION TWO

Shore Wanderers 1, Broadway Celtic 3: Title-chasing Cletic took a fourth minute lead when Darren Burgoyne collected the ball on the left and played a perfectly weighted path into Paul O'Neill who found the net with a first time shot.

Broadway doubled their lead on 25 minutes when Thomas Agnew fed Brian Maybin down the right and he crossed to the back post for Burgoyne to head home.

Celtic made sure of all three points on the hour mark when Stephen Sexton played the ball to Brian Maybin who flicked the ball over his man before coolly picking his spot from 18 yards out.

After this Shore piled the pressure onto Celtic and got a goal back with 10 minutes to go when Aaron Scott sent over a low corner which was hammered home by William Brown from six yards out.

BSML DIVISION THREE

Woodside 3, Lisnafillan Swifts 4: Woodside's first goal came from a lovely through ball from Mark Tweed to Gary Tweed and he latched onto it and was able to coolly chip the onrushing Gregg Knowles from 20 yards.

Again, another through ball from Gary Tweed released Trevor Richardson who smashed home past the hapless Lisnafillan keeper to make it 2-0.

Lisnafillan needed some inspiration and on 30 minutes they got it from Ryan O'Neill who met a clearance from a corner from all of 30 yards out and his half volley flew into the top corner of the Woodside net.

The Galgorm team were trying to take this lift into the second half but it was Woodside who scored the next goal. Great wing play by Sam Branston saw his delightful cross beat two Swifts defenders and Philip Davidson slotted home from six yards out.

Woodside should have killed off the match when they got a penalty but Swifts keeper Greg Knowles saved Mark Tweed's weak spot kick.

Time was running out for Lisnafillan and the introduction of Ryan McKinley, Bobby Carlin and Mark Graham on the hour mark changed the game. Great work by Gareth Burnside down the right saw his inch perfect cross meet the head of Trevor McAleese and the midfielder smashed his header into the back of the net to make it 3-2.

It was all Lisnafillan now and a cross from Carlin was met by Trevor McAleese again to sweep an effort past Stevie Mark in Woodside's goal and make it 3-3.

Swifts had the final say when Gareth Burnside sent his free kick from 25 yards sail over the Woodside keeper and into the back of the net to earn his side a hard fought 4-3 victory and keeps the Swifts right in amongst the play off places.
