Super show from Rathfriland U8’s

Rathfriland U8’s v Windmill U8’s

Rathfriland U8’s captained by Callum Weir lined up for their season debut on Saturday morning at the Games Development Centre at St.Colmans, Newry. There were a number of new starts not least coach William Walsh.

As the game kicked off Joseph Trimble and Eoghan Travers got to work straight away and never allowed Windmill to settle. The pressure paid off and with a neat pass from Trimble, Travers slotted home the first of the season for the team. This early attack shocked Windmill and straight after kickoff Travers burst through again to neatly finish his second.

Windmill soon launched a few attacks of their own but were stopped in their tracks by the big two at the back, Callum Weir and Ethan Walsh who were rarely troubled. On one rare occasion Windmill got a shot away but it was brilliantly saved by Aaron Monaghan in goal.

Towards the end of the first period some neat passing from the back to Travers and then to Trimble allowed him to sprint through and score on his debut for Rathfriland.

The second period was business as usual and a flurry of goals came from Travers and Trimble. The Windmill team never recovered from this and Rathfriland were in charge for the rest of the game. The pick of Travers goals came from a free kick which was placed perfectly into the top left corner.

With the control Rathfriland had this allowed Callum Weir to be freed up at the back knowing Ethan Walsh was there to clear up. Weir pushed forward on a number of occasions and was able to claim a couple of goals for himself. Noah Bennett and Alfie McConville made their season debut in midfield. Both were impressive and kept up the hard work and made life hard for their opponents.

Some changes to the team allowed Ronan McGivern to make his debut and one of his passes allowed Monaghan to finish off neatly.

The final period was fairly straightforward and allowed Travers, Trimble and Weir to add to their tally. This was a very impressive first outing and all the hard work in training paid off. Thank you to all the boys for their effort and to the parents who helped on the morning as well.

Team: Aaron Monaghan, Ethan Walsh, Callum Weir, Joseph Trimble, Eoghan Travers, Alfie McConville, Noah Bennett, Ronan McGivern.
