Super sub Hegarty

A late goal from substitute Corey Hegarty was enough for Institute to defeat Banbridge Town on Monday night and book their place in the third round of the IRN-BRU League Cup.

The teenager came off the bench to fire home from close range, as ’Stute’s domination finally paid off.

Just when they thought that Town keeper Keiran Maguire was going to deny them a place in the next round, the 17-year-old was the right man in the right place to make no mistake from close range.

The home side went close to breaking the deadlock after just two minutes when Sean McCarron cut in from the left before unleashing a super drive, which Town keeper Maguire did well to keep out.

Moments later another slick passing move by ’Stute ended with Michael McCrudden’s left wing cross to the back post being headed just wide by the lively McCarron.

On 27 minutes Town, with their first chance in the tie, missed a golden chance when Paul Walsh got in behind the ’Stute defence, but his attempted lob over the out-rushing Corey Wilson, flashed wide.

Soon after a clever pass by Sean Roddy released McCrudden, but after getting away from Stuart Thompson, the midfielder’s shot was parried away by Maguire.

Maguire came to his side’s rescue again just after the half-hour mark when he again denied McCrudden, this time the keeper instinctively kept out the Waterside man’s glancing close range header.

Institute started the second half on the front foot but left-back Dean Jarvis latched onto Aaron Walsh’s super cross field pass but after ghosting in at the back post he dragged his shot wide.

Shortly after Maguire made another super save this time keeping out McCrudden’s close range shot, after the midfielder had created himself some space inside the box.

Wilson was called into action on 63 minutes when at full stretch he did well to keep out Conor Downey’s header.

The action continued a minute later this time McCarron’s left wing centre found Darren McCauley, but the midfielder’s diving header from close range flashed over.

In the closing stages the Drumahoe men deservedly got the break through when McCrudden’s jinking run and cross from the left wasn’t cleared properly by the visitors and the alert Hegarty was on hand to turn home the loose ball.
