Swifts sunk by last-minute winner

A LAST-MINUTE Neil McGrath strike sent Kilbride Swifts crashing out of the Crawford Cup at the hands of Brantwood at the weekend.

The Swifts had edged in front midway through the first half of this second-round tie when Neil Lammey put them a goal up.

Good work from promising winger Jordan Kernaghan found centre-midfielder Lammey in space and he side-stepped his marker to net his third of the season.

Brantwood had to wait until the second period to claw their way back into the game and they did so in style when Stephen Bainbridge, on loan from Ballyclare Comrades, slid the ball past ‘keeper Thomas Treacy.

The Belfast side, who sit top of the Ballymena and Provincial League, sealed their place in the semi-final stages when McGrath smashed home from a corner in the last minute of the game.

Kilbride had played well in the first half but once Bantwood restored parity it was one-way traffic with the Swifts’ rearguard, led by captain Phil McMahon, doing well to keep Brantwood out for as long as they did.

Kilbride Swifts: Treacy - Biggerstaff, McMahon, Baird, Garrett – McLoed, Lammey, McGreavey (Smyth), B. McSkimmon, Kernaghan - G. Miskimmon. Subs: Smyth, Young, Taylor.

Result: Brantwood 2 v Kilbride Swifts 1
