It means the 32-year-old is about to embark on his 18th consecutive season with the Championship 1 club.

“I am absolutely delighted to be on board for another year, especially as I feel it will be a pivotal one under the reign of Michael Hughes,” he told the Times.

“To say Carrick Rangers is the only club for me is an understatement, but they really are! I have always had them at the forefront of any footballing decision I’ve made during my career and with my connection with the fans, I can’t imagine playing for anyone else.”

Taggart signed his first contract with Rangers in July 1996, making his debut in February 1997. Now he is looking forward to the prospect of mounting a title challenge and targeting cup success during 2013-14.

He added: “The staff have worked very hard to bring in players with Premiership experience to improve the quality the current squad possesses. With the new additions on board, the players are in no doubt that the main aim for the season must be promotion.

“We have had a very good pre-season, defeating Irish League champions Cliftonville and Irish Cup winners Glentoran, but the real test begins away to Coagh United on Saturday where three points and a good start is essential.”
