Tantalisingly close to a final but still hard work ahead for Glenavon

The sides meet in their quarter-final tie at Mourneview Park on Tuesday night (7.45pm).

Striker David Rainey says it would be ‘massive’ for Glenavon to reach their first major cup final in 12 years.

“It’s a bonus to win every round of the Cup. When you get to a semi-final you can nearly taste the success. It’s still a long way to the final but you never know.

“We’ve got to focus on this game first and hopefully get through. We’ve had two tough confrontations with them in the league and they’ll be feeling aggrieved from the last match at their place.
“They’ll be out all guns blazing to get themselves into the semi-final.”

Rainey has impressed Blues’ supporters with his tireless performances to date but, having netted four goals in 15 games, he isn’t happy with his own displays.

“I feel I’ve let myself and Gary (Hamilton) down a bit by not returning enough goals but that’s just the way football can be,” he said.

“You can be trying your hardest and getting nowhere. Other times things just fly off you and into the net. I’m trying hard though, I’m giving 100% every week and I can do no more. Hopefully a break of luck will come soon enough.”
