“We were three up and coasting, and missed at least five good chances to have put it to bed,” Tech boss Johnny Hastings told the Times. “Fair play to Newtownbreda, they never gave up and the pitch made it difficult near the end; it was cutting up badly – but at least we’re in the next round.”

The Tech opened the scoring on 25 minutes when Ryan Thompson got his head to a Darren McNeill corner. Five minutes later, another testing corner from McNeill was turned into his own net by a ‘Breda defender.

Just before the break, Lee Thompson could have made it three, but he plonked the ball straight at the keeper in a one-on-one.

Number three arrived early in the second session – a first of the season for substitute Jack Wharry; his shot taking a deflection off a defender on its way past the keeper.

Dylan Monaghan, also just off the bench, almost made his mark with a fine effort that clipped the upright. Sean Ward also missed a fine opportunity, while the keeper did well to frustrate Thompson.

Instead, it was Newtownbreda who broke away after Monaghan’s pass stuck in the mud, stabbing the ball past the onrushing Chris Keenan.
